South Korea’s acting president Choi Sang-mok announced today that he has accepted the resignation of Park Chung-joon, the head of the presidential security agency.
Choi, who also serves as deputy prime minister, expressed regret over the clashes between law enforcement officials and the Presidential Security Service during the attempt to arrest President Yun and called on lawmakers to reach a bipartisan agreement to launch an independent investigation.
The head of the Presidential Security Service resigned shortly before being questioned by police today over allegations that investigators prevented them from executing an arrest warrant for President Yun to investigate his failed attempt to impose martial law on 3 December.
Police and the anti-graft agency are planning a second attempt to arrest President Yun, who has not left his official residence for weeks, after a previous attempt by the presidential security service prevented his arrest.
