South Korean authorities arrest ousted president Yun

Investigators in South Korea began questioning ousted President Yun Suk-yol on Wednesday after he was arrested on a warrant in connection with his failed attempt to impose martial law in the country a month and a half ago.

South Korea’s anti-corruption agency said the ousted president was detained hours after hundreds of agency investigators and police officers arrived at his presidential compound to arrest him.

The Associated Press quoted the ousted president as saying that ‘the rule of law has completely collapsed’ following his arrest in connection with the investigation into his declaration of martial law.

Yoon was arrested about three hours after hundreds of police officers entered the compound in their second attempt to arrest him.

Yoon’s lawyers tried to persuade investigators not to execute the warrant, saying the president would voluntarily appear for questioning, but the agency refused.

Yoon has been holed up in his residence in Seoul’s Hannam-dong district for several weeks, vowing to ‘fight to the end’ against efforts to oust him.

Yoon justified his declaration of martial law on 3 December as a legitimate act by the president.
