South Sudan imposes curfew after riots in capital

South Sudanese police imposed a nationwide curfew from 6pm (1600 GMT) on Friday after a night of rioting in the capital over the killing of South Sudanese nationals by the army and allied groups in Sudan.

In a broadcast on state television, police chief Abraham Peter Manoat said the curfew would continue from 6pm to 6am every day until further notice to try to restore security and prevent destruction of property, and said: ‘The police will not tolerate any violations,’ according to Reuters.

Four people were injured, some with bullets and sharp objects, in South Sudan’s capital Juba on Thursday evening after youths looted and vandalised Sudanese shops in several neighbourhoods.

Shops were closed in many suburbs of Juba on Friday as police and other security forces tried to move Sudanese to safer areas for fear of being attacked by rioters.
