Amid the anticipated strategic shifts in U.S. defense policy under President Donald Trump, French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu expressed concerns about the impact this change could have on Europe.
He emphasized that Europe must strive for strategic independence regardless of U.S. leadership, noting that Trump’s harsh tone could accelerate this shift.
Lecornu also pointed out the need for Europe to strengthen its own defense capabilities, particularly through supporting and developing its defense industries.
The minister stated, “The desire to purchase more weapons from the United States is a historical contradiction,” stressing that achieving Europe’s strategic independence can only be realized by investing in local technologies and industries.
