A South Korean court on Saturday again rejected a request by prosecutors to extend the detention of ousted president Yun Suk-yol, after rejecting an earlier request on Friday, Yonhap news agency reported.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled that the prosecution has no valid reason to continue investigating Yoon’s case, which was referred to it by the Senior Officials Corruption Investigation Bureau, which has already investigated the case, as the prosecution only has the right to decide whether to indict Yoon.
Prosecutors requested the extension of Yoon’s detention on Thursday when the Senior Officials Corruption Investigation Bureau referred Yoon’s case to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office.
Under the law, investigation and prosecution are separated to ensure that justice is done in the investigation.
Prosecutors were expected to file rebellion and other charges against Yoon, who is in custody, at the end of this week.
