More than 100 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 wounded in the past three days of clashes in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s main city of Goma, according to an AFP count based on hospital reports on Tuesday.

Many bodies are still in the city and need to be recovered as soon as possible,’ a doctor told the agency after fighting between the Congolese army and the M23 rebel group, which is backed by Rwandan troops.

The United States has urged its citizens in the Democratic Republic of Congo to leave the country amid clashes in the eastern city of Goma.

The US embassy in Kinshasa issued a statement on Tuesday warning of an increase in violence in the Congolese capital.

For her part, DRC Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner called on the UN Security Council to take action to stop the ongoing clashes.
