Mexico announces conditional acceptance of migrants deported by the US

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that her country will conditionally accept illegal immigrants deported from the United States.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, she said that Mexico would accept migrants deported by the US, but ‘does not want to become a third safe country for them’.

Asked about the possibility of sending migrants from other countries to Mexico, she added that her country ‘does not leave people in difficult situations at the border, and this is not a new situation for us’.

She noted that they are maintaining channels of dialogue in this regard, adding: ‘We are following a respectful and responsible attitude and dialogue to protect our sovereignty and respect the rights of Mexicans.

According to local press, more than 4,000 illegal Mexican migrants have been deported from the US since US President Donald Trump took office on 20 January.
