A senior advisor on Middle Eastern affairs to the Russian government stated that Moscow is ready to assist in reconstructing Syria while continuing efforts to secure an agreement with the new leadership to retain military bases in the port of Tartus and Hmeimim Airport.
These efforts come at a time of intensified diplomatic activity in the Syrian arena between Moscow and Western countries, as the Kremlin struggles to maintain its influence in Syria following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad last month.
The bases in Tartus and Hmeimim Airport hold strategic importance for Moscow in the region.
