China investigates Google for ‘violating’ anti-monopoly rules

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation announced on Tuesday that it has launched an investigation into Google for allegedly ‘violating’ anti-monopoly rules.

This is part of a series of measures taken by the Beijing administration in response to the new 10% US tariffs on China.

China imposes strict censorship on internet content, including blocking access to Google’s main search engine and other services.

Although Google ceased operations in China in 2010, it still generates revenue from advertising sales in overseas markets.

Google’s revenue from China in 2018 was around $3 billion, according to The Information.

On Tuesday, Beijing announced its intention to impose new tariffs on selected US imports in response to President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs on Chinese goods.
