Panama Canal Authority denies free passage for US government ships

The Panama Canal Authority on Thursday denied that US government ships are exempt from paying tolls, as confirmed earlier by the US State Department.

The independent body that manages the waterway said the Panama Canal Authority, which has the power to set tolls and other rights for transit through the canal, had not made any adjustments to those rights.

The United States announced on Wednesday night that its government ships would be allowed to transit the Panama Canal for free, after President Donald Trump put pressure on Panamanian authorities.
