Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that the cost of the Kahramanmara earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria in 2023 is $104 billion.
He made the remarks today while attending an event in the eastern Turkish province of Adiyaman to mark the second anniversary of the 6 February 2023 earthquake, which has been described as devastating due to the high human and material losses.
Erdogan said the earthquake – which hit an area larger than many countries in the world – affected 14 million citizens and caused the displacement of more than 2.5 million citizens to different states.
He said the cost of the earthquake was $104 billion directly and $150 billion indirectly.
