3 police officers killed in an attack by militants in northwestern Pakistan

Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in the town of Karak in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the early hours of Thursday, killing three policemen and wounding five others before fleeing the scene, police said.

According to the Associated Press, security forces also carried out an operation last night in the North Waziristan region bordering Afghanistan that resulted in a fierce gunfight in which 12 militants and one soldier were killed, the army said in a statement. Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the dead militants, the army said.
