Kenya urges ‘immediate ceasefire’ at summit on eastern DRC conflict

Kenyan President William Ruto urged all armed forces in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to cease hostilities during a speech at a summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Saturday attended by a number of African heads of state.
Ruto, who currently chairs the East African Community, said: ‘We call on all parties to operationalise the ceasefire, in particular the M23 to stop further advances and the FARDC to stop all reprisals.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his Congolese counterpart Felix Tshisekedi joined the talks in Tanzania, which bring together the eight-member EAC and the 16-member Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The Dar es Salaam summit is aimed at halting fighting in Goma, eastern DRC, between the Rwandan-backed M23 and Congolese army troops.
