Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation on Monday, stating that he seeks to prevent a potential political crisis amid expectations of his impeachment by parliament.
In a statement, Iohannis said, “To spare Romania and its citizens from this crisis, I resign from the position of President of Romania. I will leave my post the day after tomorrow, February 12.”
Iohannis has held the presidency since 2014 and completed two terms, but the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the recent elections, leading to an extension of his presidency.
