UN: Rapid Support Forces blocking humanitarian access in Darfur

The United Nations (UN) on Monday accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of preventing life-saving aid from reaching people in need in Sudan, particularly in the Darfur region.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Clementine Salami Nkweta, said in a statement that ongoing restrictions imposed by the Sudanese Agency for Relief and Humanitarian Operations, which is affiliated with the RSF, are preventing life-saving aid from reaching those who need it most.

In August 2023, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (Hemedti) announced the creation of this agency, ostensibly to manage humanitarian aid in RSF-controlled areas.

The UN official called for an end to interference in humanitarian affairs and the simplification of procedures for humanitarian aid convoys.

The RSF controls four of the five states in Darfur.
