Families of Israeli prisoners block Jerusalem road to demand completion of swap deal

Families of Israeli prisoners in Gaza blocked a major road in the occupied city of Jerusalem on Tuesday, demanding the completion of a ceasefire and swap deal with Hamas.

It came ahead of Tuesday’s meeting of Israel’s security and political cabinet and hours after developments that put the fate of the deal in jeopardy over Israeli policy.

The demonstrators, accompanied by activists, blocked Route 1 in Jerusalem (one of the main roads), demanding that the Gaza deal not be obstructed and that it be expedited, state radio reported.

Hamas announced on Monday that the handover of Israeli prisoners, who were due to be released on Saturday, would be postponed until Tel Aviv stops its violations and complies with all the terms of the agreement, which came into force on 19 January.
