New York state bans use of Chinese DeepSec on government equipment

The US state of New York has banned the use of DeepSec, an artificial intelligence model developed by a Chinese company, on government devices due to ‘security concerns’.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Monday night that government employees in the state will be prohibited from downloading the DeepSec application onto public sector devices and networks.

In a statement, Hochul cited concerns about DeepSec’s storage of user data and access to technical secrets.

She added: ‘Our priority is public safety, and we will continue to work to protect New Yorkers from foreign and domestic threats.

On 20 January, DeepSec unveiled an AI model in China that it developed at a lower cost and using fewer chips than other AI companies.
