At least nine people have died in the eastern United States, eight of them in Kentucky, where heavy rains have caused deadly flooding and mobilised emergency services, local authorities said yesterday (Sunday).

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear told a news conference: “We can confirm that we have lost at least eight Kentucky residents. According to the governor, most of the dead were trapped in their vehicles in the water, including a mother and her child.
