Tunisia: Court Approves Conditional Release and Travel Ban on Rights Activist Sihem Ben Sedrine

The Tunisian judiciary approved the conditional release of rights activist Sihem Ben Sedrine on Wednesday, allowing her to be tried outside of prison.

The official spokesperson for the Court of Appeal in Tunisia, Habib Terrkhani, clarified that the release comes with a travel ban, preventing her from leaving Tunisian territory.

The Public Prosecution had referred Ben Sedrine, known for her opposition to the regimes of former presidents Habib Bourguiba and Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, on charges of falsifying a report from the Truth and Dignity Commission regarding the French bank file, following a complaint filed by a member of the commission.

The commission was established in 2014 and specializes in transitional justice and redressing the victims since 1955, particularly during Ben Ali’s rule.
