China completes drilling of Asia’s deepest vertical oil well at 10910 metres

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced on Thursday that it has completed the drilling of Asia’s deepest vertical oil well, which reached a depth of 10,910 metres in a desert in northwest China.

The well, known as Xinditake-1, is located in the heart of the Taklimakan Desert in the Tarim Basin of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region as a scientific exploration project.
The company said it started drilling the well on 30 May 2023 and took more than 580 days to complete the 10,910 metre deep well, with more than half of the time, or about 300 days, spent on the last 910 metres.

The world’s second deepest vertical well achieved other world-class technical breakthroughs, including the deepest liner cementing, the deepest wireline logging and the fastest onshore drilling of more than 10,000 metres.
