Nearly 200 Venezuelan migrants in the United States have returned home after being detained at Guantanamo Bay, in a wave of deportation flights as part of US President Donald Trump’s policy to combat illegal immigration.
US and Venezuelan authorities confirmed the deportations, which were based on a temporary stopover in Honduras, where 177 Venezuelans left a US Customs and Immigration Service flight and boarded a Venezuelan plane bound for the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, according to the Associated Press.
US President Donald Trump’s administration has placed a high priority on deporting people who have exhausted all legal appeals to remain in the United States. According to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, nearly 1.5 million people had received final orders of deportation as of 24 November, including more than 22,000 Venezuelans.
