Australia Fines Telegram $1 Million for Harmful Content

The Australian Cyber Safety Authority has imposed a fine of AUD 1 million (equivalent to USD 640,000) on the popular messaging platform Telegram.

This action follows the platform’s delay in providing clear answers regarding measures taken to curb the spread of harmful content, including child abuse materials and extremist violent content.

In March 2024, the Cyber Safety Committee requested major social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, X, Reddit, and Telegram, to clarify their actions to prevent the exploitation of live streaming features in recruitment by extremists.
