Tension Between France and Algeria After Statements on Revising Immigration Agreement

French Prime Minister François Bayrou announced the commencement of a “re-evaluation” of the 1968 immigration agreement that facilitated the settlement of Algerians in France.
In response, the Algerian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Algeria “will not accept being addressed with warnings or threats.”

This tension arises following the incident in Mulhouse, France, where one person was killed and others injured in a stabbing attack carried out by an Algerian national who had been ordered to leave France 14 times but remained in the country.
