A 4-magnitude earthquake strikes the Gulf of Aqaba in southern Jordan

An earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale struck the Gulf of Aqaba in southern Jordan on Thursday afternoon.

The Jordan Seismological Observatory Centre said in a statement that an earthquake struck at 14:42 local time, and that the tremor was ‘felt’ 60 kilometres south of the city of Aqaba, at a depth of 19 kilometres.

The Jordanian authorities did not report any casualties or material damage.

The southern regions of the kingdom and the Jordan Valley are subject to seismic activity, the strongest of which was in Aqaba in November 1995 with a magnitude of 7.3.
