Two Dead and 186 Missing After Migrant Boats Capsize Off Yemen and Djibouti Coasts

he International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced today that two migrants have died and 186 are missing after four boats carrying them capsized off the coasts of Yemen and Djibouti.

According to the IOM, the boats were carrying African migrants, including women and children, seeking to reach Gulf countries in search of employment opportunities and a better life. The boats departed from the Horn of Africa towards Yemen but capsized due to overcrowding and adverse weather conditions.

Local and international search and rescue teams are continuing their efforts to find the missing and provide assistance to survivors. The IOM emphasized the need to strengthen international efforts to address the root causes of irregular migration and protect migrants’ rights.

This incident is not the first of its kind in the region; in January, 20 migrants died after a boat capsized off the coast of Taiz Governorate in Yemen.

In October 2024, dozens of migrants were forced to jump from their boats off the coast of Djibouti, leading to many drowning.
