Guinea-Bissau President Moves Presidential and Legislative Elections to November 23

Guinea-Bissau’s President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has announced the advancement of the presidential and legislative elections to November 23, 2025, instead of the previously scheduled date of November 30.

This decision comes amid political controversy over the expiration of Embaló’s term. The opposition insists that his mandate ended on February 27, 2025, while the Supreme Court ruled that it officially expires on September 4, 2025.

Since December 2023, the country has been experiencing political instability following the dissolution of parliament and the postponement of legislative elections, originally scheduled for November 24, 2024, due to logistical and financial difficulties.

The opposition is demanding that the president step down and that a transitional government be formed to oversee the upcoming elections. However, Embaló maintains that he will remain in office until a new president is elected.
