Myanmar’s military leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, announced that the country will hold general elections in December 2025 or January 2026, marking the first time a specific timeframe has been set for long-promised polls.
Since the February 2021 coup that ousted the elected civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar has been in political turmoil, with the military facing widespread armed resistance. General Hlaing had promised elections, but his administration repeatedly extended the state of emergency due to ongoing conflicts.
