Greenland Opens Polls for Parliamentary Elections

Greenland’s polling stations opened today, Tuesday, March 11, 2025, for an early parliamentary election. The election comes amid increasing discussions about the island’s potential independence, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed interest in acquiring Greenland.

Around 40,500 voters out of Greenland’s 57,000 population are eligible to participate in this election. Candidates are competing for 31 seats in the Greenlandic Parliament, Inatsisartut, with a majority requiring at least 16 seats.

Preliminary results are expected in the early hours of March 12, between 01:00 and 03:00 GMT.

This election marks a critical turning point for Greenland, shaping its path toward independence and its international alliances.
