Ukraine announced its support for a U.S.-backed proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia. This development follows high-level negotiations held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and aims to pave the way for a long-term peace agreement. The ceasefire will require Russian approval to take effect.
Under the proposed deal, the United States will resume military aid and intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, which had been recently suspended. Additionally, the agreement includes humanitarian efforts such as prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of Ukrainian children who were taken to Russia during the war.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the proposal, stating that he would engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin to explore ways to implement the ceasefire and advance toward a lasting diplomatic resolution.
World leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, welcomed Ukraine’s decision and urged Russia to accept the initiative.
Previously, Russia had rejected temporary ceasefire proposals, citing concerns that they would only serve to strengthen Ukraine’s military position. The response from Moscow to this latest initiative remains uncertain.
The international community is now closely watching Russia’s next move, as this agreement could mark a significant step toward ending a conflict that has lasted for more than three years.
