5.7 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan’s east coast

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taitung County on Taiwan’s east coast, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said on Thursday.

The quake was centred 53 kilometres northeast of the county centre and was recorded at a depth of 12 kilometres below sea level, the bureau said in a statement.

It was felt in villages in Taitung and northern Hualien counties, but there were no reports of casualties or material damage.
