China is hosting trilateral talks with Iran and Russia in Beijing today to discuss Iran’s nuclear program. The meeting is chaired by Ma Zhaoxu, China’s Vice Foreign Minister, alongside senior diplomatic representatives from Russia and Iran.
These discussions follow a closed-door United Nations Security Council meeting in New York, which addressed Iran’s expanding enriched uranium stockpile. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has raised concerns over Iran’s increased uranium enrichment levels, which have reached 60% purity, a step closer to weapons-grade material.
Since the Ukraine war began in 2022, Iran-Russia ties have strengthened, with both countries signing a strategic cooperation treaty in January 2025. China and Russia, both permanent UN Security Council members, maintain close economic and energy ties with Iran.
