Iran Abolishes Morality Police and Amends Hijab Law

Iran has officially announced the abolition of the Morality Police, as part of amendments to the “Chastity and Hijab” law, according to Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

In an official statement, Ghalibaf confirmed that the new law eliminates the so-called Guidance Patrols, commonly known as the Morality Police, which were responsible for enforcing Islamic dress codes in the country.

This decision follows months of protests and public demands condemning the strict regulations imposed on women in Iran, particularly after the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022 while in the custody of the Morality Police. Her death sparked a wave of anger and nationwide demonstrations that extended beyond Iran’s borders.

Despite the abolition of these patrols, Iranian authorities have not yet clarified how the new hijab regulations will be enforced. There is speculation that alternative measures such as fines or legal actions may be introduced instead.
