Germany Reopens Its Embassy in Damascus

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced on Thursday the reopening of Germany’s embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, after being closed for 13 years since 2012 due to the conflict in Syria.

During her visit to Damascus, Baerbock stated that a small team of German diplomats will now be stationed at the embassy to support stability efforts and contribute to Syria’s reconstruction, which has been severely affected by years of war.

She clarified that consular services and visa applications will continue to be handled by the German embassy in Beirut, citing ongoing security concerns in Syria.

Germany was among the countries that severed diplomatic ties with Damascus at the onset of the Syrian conflict. However, the recent decision reflects a shift in international engagement, as several European nations seek to contribute to rebuilding Syria and ensuring long-term stability.

With this move, Germany joins other European countries, including Italy and Spain, that have reopened their embassies in Damascus following improved security and political conditions in the country.
