FIFA Expels Mexico’s Club León From Club World Cup Over Multi-Ownership Violations

FIFA announced on Friday the disqualification of Mexican side Club León from the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup this summer, citing the club’s failure to comply with multi-club ownership regulations.

In an official statement, FIFA said: “Following disciplinary proceedings against Pachuca and Club León, the Chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee has decided to refer the matter directly to the FIFA Appeal Committee, in accordance with Article 56(3) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”

This move delivers a significant setback to Club León, which had qualified for the tournament. FIFA has yet to confirm which team will replace the Mexican side.

The governing body’s rules prohibit teams owned by the same entity from competing in the same international tournament to ensure the integrity and fairness of competition.
