The Pakistani army effectively thwarted militants’ attempts to infiltrate from the western border with Afghanistan on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of 16 militants in a firefight in North Waziristan.

In another development, Pakistan has charged human rights activist Marang Baloch with terrorism after organizing a protest in Balochistan that led to the deaths of three demonstrators.

Baloch faces charges of incitement and murder following her arrest in connection with the protests, while the United Nations has expressed concern over her detention.
