Pope Francis, the Vatican’s leader, appeared publicly on Sunday for the first time in five weeks after being hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome for treatment of severe pneumonia.

The 88-year-old pope is set to leave the hospital today, but doctors have announced that he will require at least a two-month recovery period.
