A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand’s South Island on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, with no tsunami warning issued and no immediate reports of casualties or damage, based on preliminary information.

However, New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency warned of potentially strong and unusual sea currents and advised residents to stay away from beaches and the ocean as a precaution.

New Zealand lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
