Peru’s President Calls for General Elections in April 2026 to End Political Crisis

On Tuesday  Peruvian President Dina Boluarte announced that the country will hold general elections on April 12, 2026, as part of efforts to restore political stability and public confidence in state institutions.

In a televised address, Boluarte confirmed that the elections will include the presidency, 130 members of the lower house, and 60 senators—reinstating a bicameral legislature for the first time since the early 1990s.

Boluarte assumed office in December 2022 after the removal of President Pedro Castillo, who was impeached following an attempt to dissolve parliament.
