China Launches Large-Scale Military Drills in Taiwan

China has launched large-scale military manoeuvres around Taiwan in a new escalatory move that raises tensions in the region. The manoeuvres, announced on 1 April 2025, involved naval, air and land operations, and included the use of live ammunition in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas.

The manoeuvres are seen as a show of force by China in response to what Beijing sees as separatist moves by the Taiwanese government, as well as growing US support for Taipei.

The United States, Japan and the European Union have expressed grave concern over the manoeuvres, warning that they could threaten regional and international stability. Taiwan has confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation and that its armed forces are on high alert to respond to any potential threat.

These developments demonstrate a continuing escalation of tensions between China and Taiwan and raise concerns about the potential for armed conflict in the region.
