South Korea’s Constitutional Court to Rule Friday on President’s Impeachment

South Korea’s Constitutional Court announced it will deliver its verdict on Friday, April 4, 2025, regarding the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was suspended from office in December after declaring martial law.

On December 3, 2024, President Yoon briefly declared martial law and deployed military forces to the National Assembly, triggering a major political crisis and widespread condemnation. His actions led to an impeachment vote and temporary suspension from office pending a constitutional ruling.

If the court upholds the impeachment, a new presidential election must be held within 60 days. If the impeachment is overturned, President Yoon will immediately resume his presidential duties.

In anticipation of the ruling, Acting President Han Duck-soo has called on citizens to remain calm and respect the rule of law. Authorities have also tightened security around the court to prevent potential unrest.

The ruling will mark a pivotal moment in South Korea’s political landscape, potentially reshaping the country’s leadership amid heightened public scrutiny.
