Iran’s official Tasnim News Agency announced that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will hold indirect talks with U.S. Middle East envoy Steven Witkoff this coming Saturday in the Sultanate of Oman. The discussions mark a significant diplomatic move to ease growing tensions between Tehran and Washington over Iran’s nuclear program.
The negotiations, mediated by Oman, represent the first substantial exchange between the two sides since the suspension of nuclear talks in Vienna. According to the Iranian agency, the dialogue will focus on the potential revival of the nuclear agreement, mutual guarantees, and easing of U.S. economic sanctions on Tehran.
While Iranian officials emphasized the indirect nature of the talks, the U.S. administration has expressed openness to direct dialogue should the conditions permit. Diplomatic sources noted that Oman, which has successfully hosted similar talks in the past, provides a trusted and neutral environment for such sensitive discussions.
Following the announcement, Iran’s national currency, the rial, saw a noticeable recovery, and stock market indicators in Tehran surged—signals of market optimism for a possible diplomatic breakthrough.
This development follows a message sent by U.S. President Donald Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, aiming to revive the stalled negotiations after Washington’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018.
