Canada will begin enforcing 25% import tariffs on select U.S.-made automobiles starting Wednesday in response to a similar move by the United States.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Tuesday that Canada “will continue to respond forcefully to every unjustified and unreasonable tariff,” referring to U.S. measures seen as violating free trade principles.
Prime Minister Mark Carney had announced the measure on April 3, without specifying the date of implementation, which has now been set for Wednesday.
The new tariffs will apply to all U.S. vehicles that do not comply with the North American Free Trade Agreement (USMCA) currently in force.
