According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), approximately 400,000 Syrian refugees have returned from neighboring countries since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, alongside over 1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) who returned to their hometowns — totaling more than 1.4 million returnees.
However, the UNHCR report warned that its projection of 1.5 million returns in 2025 may not be realized due to insufficient funding, and noted that some returnees may be forced to flee again if conditions do not improve.
The agency added that 7.4 million Syrians remain internally displaced, while nearly 16.7 million people inside Syria — about 90% of the population — are in need of humanitarian assistance.
