Peru Sentences Former President Ollanta Humala to 15 Years for Money Laundering

Peru’s National Superior Court on Tuesday sentenced former President Ollanta Humala to 15 years in prison after convicting him of money laundering related to illicit campaign financing in 2006 and 2011.

According to local media, the court found that Humala and his wife, Nadine Heredia, received over $3 million in illegal donations, allegedly from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht and the Venezuelan government, to fund his presidential campaigns.

The court ordered immediate enforcement of the sentence. Humala, who attended the hearing, was taken into custody by police and handed over to officials from Peru’s National Penitentiary Institute.

This ruling is part of a broader crackdown on political corruption in Latin America, particularly surrounding the Odebrecht scandal, which has implicated numerous former leaders across the region.
