Indian police announced on Tuesday that at least 24 people were killed in a gun attack targeting a group of tourists in Pahalgam, a popular resort town in southern Kashmir.
According to local media citing a senior police official in Kashmir, “At least 24 people were killed, although no official toll has been confirmed yet.” The attack occurred in Pahalgam, a predominantly Muslim area that attracts thousands of visitors each summer, particularly in recent years as armed violence has subsided.
The official added that the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the assault, and investigations are ongoing amid a heightened security presence.
Kashmir remains a highly sensitive and contested region between India and Pakistan, and although security has improved in recent years, it still occasionally witnesses deadly attacks and unrest.
