Spain Cancels Ammunition Deal with Israeli Company

The Spanish government has unilaterally cancelled an ammunition procurement deal with an Israeli defense company, government sources confirmed Thursday. The move comes after political pressure from Sumar, the junior partner in the ruling leftist coalition.

The contract, worth €6.8 million, was signed in February 2024 with Guardian, a company representing Israel’s IMI Systems Ltd. It involved supplying 9mm ammunition for various units of the Spanish Civil Guard. Cancellation procedures began in October 2024, according to officials.

This decision follows Spain’s October 2023 pledge to halt arms sales to Israel in response to its military actions in Gaza. The ban was later extended to cover arms purchases as well.

The cancellation reflects mounting internal tensions within the coalition, particularly over Spain’s stance on Israel’s policies in the Palestinian territories. While Sumar welcomed the move, the Interior Ministry has not issued an official statement on its implications for national security operations.
