China Considers Exempting Certain U.S. Goods from Tariffs

Media reports indicate that the Chinese government is considering suspending 125% tariffs on certain American imports, in a move aimed at de-escalating ongoing trade tensions with the United States. The products potentially affected include medical equipment, industrial chemicals such as ethane, and aircraft engines—goods deemed vital to China’s economy.

This initiative comes amid mounting domestic economic pressures in China, including deflation risks and weak consumer demand in the post-pandemic era. According to sources, the Ministry of Commerce has launched consultations with local firms to identify U.S. goods that are difficult to replace with domestic alternatives, signaling a policy shift in Beijing from confrontation to conciliation.

Meanwhile, the United States has announced plans to reduce some of its own tariffs on Chinese imports, lowering them from 145% to between 50% and 65%, as part of a broader effort to ease trade tensions between the two economic powers.
