China Leads the World with 266.8 Million Hectares of Grasslands

China is home to approximately 266.8 million hectares of grasslands, making it the largest holder of such ecosystems globally, according to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. This achievement comes as a result of the country’s intensive efforts to protect the ecological environment of its grasslands.

The administration stated that since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), the central government has invested around 110 billion yuan (approximately 15.36 billion U.S. dollars) in projects aimed at the protection and conservation of grasslands. On average, more than 3.07 million hectares of grasslands are maintained each year, while pest and rodent control efforts cover an area exceeding 6.67 million hectares annually.

Furthermore, the total output of fresh grass from China’s grasslands has surpassed 550 million tons per year, significantly contributing to the nation’s ecological stability and food security.

In addition, local authorities have intensified their monitoring and supervision efforts to ensure proper use of grassland resources and combat violations such as illegal farming and unauthorized land grabs. Advanced technologies, including satellite remote sensing, have been employed to strengthen the protection and management of these vital ecosystems.
