India: At Least 15 Killed in Hotel Fire in Kolkata

At least 15 people were killed in a fire that broke out at a hotel in the northern Indian city of Kolkata on Tuesday evening, local police announced on Wednesday.

City Police Chief Manoj Verma told reporters that “several people were rescued from rooms and from the rooftop of the hotel.” He confirmed that the fire, which erupted late Tuesday, has since been brought under control following extensive firefighting efforts.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze, while search operations continue inside the charred building.

The incident comes amid a series of similar fire-related tragedies in India, raising renewed concerns over safety standards and fire prevention measures in commercial and residential structures.
