Trump Says U.S. Close to Reaching Tariff Agreement with China

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Wednesday that the United States is close to signing a trade agreement with China to resolve ongoing disputes over tariffs.

Speaking in Michigan during an event marking the first 100 days of his second term in office, Trump stated, “Now, we are respected around the world. They come from everywhere to make deals. They want to make a deal. And you know what—we will make deals, but we don’t have to.”

Addressing the escalating trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, Trump added, “We’ll be signing a deal with China soon.”

The trade conflict has intensified in recent months after the Trump administration imposed a 34% tariff on Chinese imports, in addition to a previous 20% levy. In response, China slapped matching 34% tariffs on American goods. Washington retaliated again with another 50% increase, deepening the economic standoff between the world’s two largest economies.
